Rainbow? NOPE....SNOWBOW!

So, before I get started in this blog, I have to say that today was by far one of the funnest days I have had taken photos in a long time. If you take the time to read this, you'll understand why.

So, for those of you who don't know, I have a nephew, Rowan, who is 3 years old and lives in Australia. This kid LIVES for video chatting on skype. It's great. Usually the first three lines out of his mouth are as follows.... 1)HI UNCLE ANDREW 2)HOW'S KERRIE(my girlfriend) and 3)CAN I SEE SOME SNOW OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW. Cheeky little fella! I don't even get a "How are you"! He is just making sure Kerrie is doing well! HAHA Unfortunately, by the time I get to chat with him on skype, due to the time difference, it's always dark here and I don't really get to show him the snow outside. So, today I set out on a seemingly simple mission. Get a photo of some snow for Rowan.

Equipped with my camera and a coffee, I headed down the Bow Valley Parkway looking for some shots. I think I was only on the road for about 2 minutes when I saw a car had slid off the road into the deep snow-filled ditch. I pulled up and 4 ice climbers jumped out. Using their climbing rope, we hooked on their vehicle and I towed them out. Good start to the morning!

I keep on my way down the road looking for a subject to shoot. After arriving at Moose Meadows, I noticed out of the corner of my eye, what looked like one of the brightest rainbows I had ever seen. I jumped out, snapped a few shots and was on my way. A bit further down the road, I noticed that this "SNOWBOW" was actually a HUGE ring around the sun. And there it was, a huge tree in the middle of a little meadow, completely circled by this "snowbow". So, obviously being prepared for -35 weather, I jumped out, wearing my Dickie work pants, summer skate shoes and paper thin socks and I waded through snow up to my waste to get to the tree. I set up my camera on the tripod and started snapping away.... with little to no feeling in my hands of legs/feet! BUT, I thought it would totally be worth it. What kid wouldn't like to see snow AND a rainbow! BOOM, there ya go Rowan! He Better like it!

Little bit of this.....little bit of that

So, the last few weeks I've been working on trying to update my site a bit, getting out to look for wildlife(with almost zero luck), doing some shots for some friends and just finding stuff on my backup that I had totally forgot about. I got out to take some more snowboard shots with a friend since the weather warmed up from the balmy -40c! As well, I made it up to the Banff Springs Hotel with a friend and took a few shots there and came up with a few good ideas for some fun shoots! Still lots of uploading to do, Christmas parties and hopefully in the next few weeks get out some more for some winter shots. Check back for more updates!

Winter Has Arrived...Unfortunately

So, the other morning when I awoke after a day of +12 temperatures, there was snow.. and it was everywhere. Nothing like a nice coat of inch thick ice on your vehicle. Brutal. However, on the upside of all this white stuff being here, my friend Adam had decided he was going to go head out and try and build a little kicker to hit. Upon his arrival, he discovered a rail that had been planted in the ground which made for a perfect photo opportunity! He built up a little jump to get up on the rail and we started. This is what we came up with!

There will be some more to come as winter goes along... (Hopefully not much more winter, although it JUST started). Keep Checking Back!!

Castle Mountain Glow

So, this evening was an amazing night at Castle Mountain. Beautiful light, Awesome clouds and great weather. I figured it might be one of the last few times I will be able to capture it so I jumped on the opportunity. I wouldn't mind getting a few more as now that I'm beginning the editing process, there are some things I would have changed. Ahhh well, can't get them all! Anywho, here is one that seems to have turned out ok! Check back for some more hopefully in the not so distant future!

First Skate Sesh

So, today after work I got in contact with a local skateboarded from here in town and ventured off to give my first attempt at skate photography. We kicked it in the back alley where some of the photos turned out alright. For my first try, I'm happy that I got anything. After a few tricks back there, we headed over to the high school where there is a nice gap from flat, over a rock then down onto the sidewalk. Little did I know, for the rest of the day, I was shooting faster than my flash could sync, so they didn't turn out properly. After a few shots there, and a few across the street at the Banff International for a stair/ledge gap onto the sidewalk we called it a day. I got some good criticism from someone who actually knows what they are doing and am going to try a few different things on the next tour out! Until then....... THAT'S IT

Some moose and some other stuff

It's been a busy week so far. I've been meaning to get around to doing this so here we go.

Last weekend I headed out to the area that I watch moose at. When I first arrived there were a couple of moose that were high-tailing it across the field full tilt, so needless to say, I didn't see them for any amount of time, let alone get any photos. However, after waiting about 5 more minutes, there was a Bull and Cow that came moseying down the meadow headed for the "hang out" spot. I watched them for a bit, got a few photos and then headed back home. These are just a couple of shots I took while I was out there.

Anyway, I am going to try and get some shooting done this weekend if I find myself with a bit of spare time! Hoping Saturday is a good one. Sunday is a wedding shoot so won't be getting much else done that day! So, I will put an update up soon in the not so distant future.

Up And Running....finally

So, I have finally figured out how to get my blog set up within my page. Not an easy task! I still have some tweaking to do but, ALAS, it works! I am going to try and keep up with this blog and just kind of keep people filled in on the happenings of my photography. So, check back and I will keep you posted!
